St. Louis Railroad Crossing Accident Highlights Dangers

Wherever railroad tracks and roads intersect, the potential for deadly collisions involving trains and cars exists. According to the Federal Railroad Administration’s Office of Safety Analysis, in 2009 there were nearly 2,000 incidents at public railroad crossings resulting in 247 deaths and 705 injured people.

Unfortunately, St. Louis is not immune from deadly train-vehicle collisions. In mid November, a 76-year-old St. Louis County woman was killed when she drove her auto into the path of an oncoming train, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

The woman was driving her car north on Dielman Road near Olivette when her car was struck by a freight train on the Central Midland Railway tracks. The crossing had bells and flashing lights but no gates.
