St. Louis Commuters Face Several Pile Ups
St. Louis-area commuters recently faced unexpected black ice early one morning, resulting in several multi-vehicle accidents on Feb. 23. The frightening pile-ups included a nine-car accident on Interstate 64 and a 12-car accident on Interstate 55, and most notably, a 31-vehicle crash near downtown St. Louis on eastbound Interstate 64. One person was critically injured and 20 people suffered minor injuries.
Three tractor-trailers and five emergency vehicles were involved in the 5:00 a.m. accident, which closed the highway for five hours.
According to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Missouri State Highway Patrol also responded to 60 other car accidents around St. Louis, St. Charles and Lincoln counties the same morning.
Most of the St. Louis car accidents happened on bridges, overpasses and ramps and illustrate the dangers of driving even a little too fast since the ice was both invisible and unpredicted.
And although the ice was unavoidable, the severity of such accidents is increased when drivers negligently drive too fast for the winter conditions.
