ST. LOUIS, Mo. (October 12, 2015) – The S.E. Farris Law Firm recently announced that attorney and managing partner, Spencer Farris graduated from the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College in Dubois, Wyo. last month. Farris is a board certified civil trial attorney whose firm, located at 523 N. Laclede Station Rd., represents personal injury and workers’ compensation clients throughout Missouri and Illinois. The college, founded by renowned trial lawyer Gerry Spence, is dedicated to training and educating lawyers and judges who are committed to the jury system and to representing and obtaining justice for individuals.

“I applied to the six week program when Gerry Spence first started the college in 1994. Although I didn’t feel fortunate at the time, I was not selected and it turned out to be a blessing. I was too inexperienced to fully benefit from the program then,” said Farris.

Farris reapplied to the college’s seven-step certification program in 2013 and completed a series of regional courses over the next two years. “I spent my 49th birthday at my first regional. I was really looking for a change in the way I tried cases, but I got something much bigger. I have a completely different approach to everything related to my clients now,” said Farris.

The curriculum consists of rigorous and comprehensive trial skills training combined with techniques from psychodrama and public speaking to better relate to clients and telling the stories in their cases. “There is a lot of science behind the method, but the basics involve really getting into the other person’s shoes to understand why they did what they did, or what they need to know to hear my client’s story,” said Farris.

“My approach is much more open and honest now, and juries respond. They know when someone is trying to sell them something and it can be very off-putting,” said Farris. “The Trial Lawyers College has given me the tools and confidence to present a case and trust a jury to do the right thing.”

Although he has been practicing law for more than two decades, Farris has noticed a lot of professional growth during the past two years. “My outlook and approach are more natural for me than some of the things I was doing before. I am less concerned with what I ‘think’ a lawyer should do,” said Farris. “By not hiding behind a facade, I am completely with the jury and my client in trial. I am also more focused on understanding the perspectives and motivations of other people, both in and out of the courtroom.”
