Road rage occurs when drivers become agitated and angry at other drivers. The raging driver may act unreasonably and drive unpredictably. These incidents occur with increasing frequency, and you should know what to do if you are the victim of a road rage accident.
What Causes Road Rage?
By definition, road rage is an unreasonable and violent response. Because they are unpredictable, it is impossible to avoid them.
Drivers may become enraged when other drivers cut them off, drives too slowly, makes demeaning gestures, or will not let their vehicle into the lane. The agitated driver may start driving erratically; they will speed up or cut lanes in an attempt to catch up to the driver or in the act of spite, return the favor. Road-raging drivers have a high chance of causing an accident, and that can make the situation worse. There are times when drivers will fight, and both physical injuries and property damage can happen. Drugs or alcohol may also be involved. If another motorist causes a wreck, even without making contact with your vehicle, automobile insurance will be involved.
Preventing Road Rage
Road rage incidents cannot always be prevented. If you notice erratic or dangerous driving, note the other vehicle’s license plate number and call the police to report the incident and follow their advice about what to do next. While you may be tempted to leave the road to avoid an incident, make sure you only do so in a safe manner, preferably to a police station or public place.
Don’t do anything to escalate the situation. The anger can be distracting and impair judgment- yours and the other driver’s.
